Sports of The World Games

Sumo, a wrestling sport, orginated in Japan and enjoyed immense popularity there throughout centuries, only spreading to the rest of the world in recent years. 85 countries are currently affiliated with the sport's international governing body, the International Sumo Federation (IFS).

Prior to starting their bout in the ring - the 'dohyo' made of sand and clay and measuring 4,55 meters in diameter - both sumo wrestlers or 'rikishi' go through ancient ceremonial preparations. They clap their hands to 'awaken the gods', toss salt in the ring for its purification, and stamp their feet to crush 'all that's evil'. They - dressed only in tightly wound silken loincloths - then crouch and prepare for the opening charge, both hands are out in front of them, knuckles down on the ground.

A bout may last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Whatever the duration, the athletes combine power and technique to force their opponents out of the ring or to throw them to the ground with any part of their body other than the soles.

The winning techniques, 'kimarite', and the fouls, 'kinjite', are clearly defined in sumo's rules. The spirit of fair play is of utmost importance: young 'sumotori' are taught to honor the winner and respect the loser in every bout.

Whatever the outcome of a bout, the winner is honored as much as the loser is respected. During The World Games 2005 Duisburg, a Russian and an Ukrianian athlete were asked by the referee to repeat their bows to each other at the conclusion of their fight. The first ones were not considered to be genuinely respectful.

2009 marks the sumo's second appearance on the Official Sports Program of The World Games. The venue assigned to the sport is the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.
